PRP Injection Therapy in Chennai

Platelet-rich plasma prepared from your own blood, used where the evidence supports it — and not where it does not.

Dr. Pankaj Hingarh, MBBS, MS (Orthopaedics) T. Nagar, Chennai Digital X-ray on site

PRP concentrates the platelets from a sample of your own blood and injects them into an injured tendon or joint. Platelets carry growth factors that signal repair, and the theory is straightforward: deliver a high concentration of those signals directly to tissue that has a poor blood supply and limited healing capacity of its own.

The honest position on PRP is that it works well for some conditions and poorly for others, and the marketing around it rarely makes that distinction. It has good evidence in lateral epicondylitis and patellar tendinopathy, and reasonable evidence in early to moderate knee osteoarthritis. It has little to offer a bone-on-bone knee.

At this clinic PRP is offered where it is indicated and declined where it is not. The procedure takes around forty minutes in total, is performed under sterile conditions at the T. Nagar clinic, and you go home immediately afterwards.

Conditions where PRP is considered

  • Early to moderate knee osteoarthritis, particularly in patients under 65
  • Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow that has not settled with rest and physiotherapy
  • Patellar tendinopathy ("jumper’s knee") and Achilles tendinopathy
  • Plantar fasciitis resistant to conventional treatment
  • Rotator cuff tendinopathy without a full-thickness tear
  • Alongside cartilage repair or ligament surgery as biological augmentation

How the procedure works

1

Assessment and honest selection

Your X-ray or scan is reviewed to confirm PRP is likely to help. Patients with end-stage arthritis are advised against it rather than sold a course of injections that will not work.

2

Blood draw and centrifugation

Around 15–20 ml of your blood is drawn and spun in a centrifuge to separate and concentrate the platelet fraction.

3

Guided injection

The concentrate is injected into the target joint or tendon under sterile conditions, with ultrasound guidance where precise placement matters.

4

Structured aftercare

Relative rest for 48 hours, no anti-inflammatory medication for a defined period — since it blunts the very response you are trying to create — then a graded loading programme.

Questions

PRP & Regenerative Injections — your questions answered

Still unsure about something? Call +91 99622 45671 and ask.

How many PRP injections will I need?
For knee osteoarthritis, a course of two or three injections spaced two to four weeks apart is common. Tendon conditions often respond to one or two. We reassess after the first before committing you to a full course.
Is PRP painful?
The injection causes a few minutes of discomfort, and there is commonly increased ache for 24 to 72 hours afterwards as the inflammatory response begins. That soreness is expected and is not a sign anything has gone wrong.
How soon does PRP work?
It is not a quick fix. Benefit typically begins around four to six weeks and continues to build for three months, because it works by stimulating repair rather than by suppressing pain. If you need immediate relief, a steroid injection acts faster — though it does not have the same regenerative intent.
Is PRP covered by health insurance in India?
Usually not. Most Indian insurers classify PRP as an outpatient or experimental procedure and exclude it. Ask us at consultation so you know where you stand before starting a course.
Can PRP avoid a knee replacement?
In early and moderate arthritis it can meaningfully delay one. In advanced, bone-on-bone arthritis it will not, and we will tell you that at the consultation rather than after three injections.
