Neck & Back Pain Treatment in Chennai

Assessment and non-surgical management of neck pain, back pain and sciatica — with the red flags checked properly.

Dr. Pankaj Hingarh, MBBS, MS (Orthopaedics) T. Nagar, Chennai Digital X-ray on site

Back and neck pain are among the most common reasons anyone visits an orthopaedic clinic, and among the most commonly over-treated. The great majority is mechanical, settles with the right activity and exercise, and never needs a scan — let alone an operation.

What matters clinically is identifying the small minority where something else is going on: nerve compression causing genuine weakness, cauda equina syndrome, infection, tumour or fracture. Those need urgent action, and the way to find them is a proper history and examination rather than an MRI for everyone.

Chennai’s IT and office workforce presents with a recognisable pattern — cervical spondylosis and postural neck pain from long hours at a desk, often with a headache at the back of the head and referred pain down the arm. It usually responds well to a specific exercise programme and workstation changes, and poorly to rest and a collar.

Conditions we assess

  • Mechanical low back pain and lumbar muscle spasm
  • Sciatica — pain radiating from the back into the leg
  • Cervical spondylosis and postural neck pain
  • Slipped or prolapsed intervertebral disc
  • Pain, tingling or numbness radiating into the arm
  • Stiffness and pain after prolonged sitting or driving
  • Osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures

Our approach

1

Red flags checked first

Bladder or bowel disturbance, saddle numbness, progressive weakness, unexplained weight loss, fever, or night pain are specifically asked about. These change everything and are excluded before anything else is considered.

2

Scans only when they change management

Most back pain does not need an MRI. Scans of pain-free adults routinely show disc bulges, so imaging without a matching clinical picture creates anxiety and unnecessary surgery rather than answers.

3

Movement rather than rest

Prolonged bed rest worsens outcomes in back pain. Treatment centres on early return to activity, specific core and postural strengthening, and pain control good enough to allow both.

4

Workstation and habit correction

For desk-based patients, screen height, chair support, and the frequency of movement breaks often matter more than any medication prescribed.

5

Onward referral when appropriate

Where genuine surgical spine pathology is identified — significant nerve compression with weakness, instability, or cauda equina — you are referred promptly to a spine surgeon. We do not hold onto cases that belong elsewhere.

Questions

Neck & Back Pain — your questions answered

Still unsure about something? Call +91 99622 45671 and ask.

Do I need an MRI for my back pain?
In most cases, no. MRI is indicated when there are red-flag symptoms, genuine nerve compression with weakness, or pain that has failed six weeks of appropriate treatment. Scanning early tends to find incidental changes that are present in plenty of pain-free people.
Can a slipped disc heal without surgery?
Yes, and most do. The majority of disc prolapses resorb over weeks to months with conservative treatment. Surgery is reserved for progressive neurological weakness, cauda equina syndrome, or pain that remains intolerable after adequate non-surgical treatment.
What are the warning signs that back pain is serious?
Difficulty passing urine or loss of bowel control, numbness around the groin or inner thighs, progressive weakness in a leg, fever with back pain, unexplained weight loss, or severe pain that is worse at night and unrelieved by position. Any of these warrants same-day assessment.
Is bed rest good for back pain?
No. Beyond a day or two in the acute phase, bed rest delays recovery and increases stiffness. Staying gently active within tolerable limits produces better outcomes, and that is what we prescribe.
