Knee Pain Treatment in Chennai

Everything the knee needs, from a first painful step on the stairs through to robotic joint replacement.

Dr. Pankaj Hingarh, MBBS, MS (Orthopaedics) T. Nagar, Chennai Digital X-ray on site

The knee is the joint that brings most people to an orthopaedic clinic, and it is also the one most often treated badly. The same symptom — pain on stairs, swelling after activity, a knee that gives way — can come from arthritis, a meniscus tear, patellofemoral overload or a ligament that never healed properly. Those four need entirely different treatment, and telling them apart is an examination problem, not a scan problem.

A great deal of knee pain in working-age adults turns out not to be arthritis at all. Patellofemoral pain, which is worse on stairs and after long sitting, is far more common, and it responds to targeted quadriceps and hip strengthening rather than to painkillers or surgery. Getting that distinction right early saves years of unnecessary medication.

Where the joint genuinely is worn out, the full range is available here — total knee replacement, robotic-assisted and kinematic alignment techniques — with the same surgeon consulting, operating and reviewing you throughout.

Our approach

How a knee is assessed here

01

Examination before imaging

How the pain began, what provokes it, whether it swells or gives way — combined with a structured examination of the knee, the hip above it and the back above that, because pain from both refers down.

02

Standing X-rays, not lying down

Arthritis has to be graded with the joint under load. A supine film can make a bone-on-bone knee look reasonably preserved, and that is a genuinely common source of missed diagnosis.

03

Non-surgical options worked through properly

Weight management and quadriceps strengthening have stronger evidence than most medications. Injections — steroid, viscosupplementation or PRP — each have a defined indication rather than being offered indiscriminately.

04

Surgery matched to the damage

Where the joint is genuinely worn out, total knee replacement is planned around your own anatomy. Where robotic or kinematic technique helps — deformity, stiffness, bilateral surgery — that is explained rather than upsold.

Questions

Knee — common questions

What causes knee pain that is worse on stairs?
Most often patellofemoral pain, where the kneecap is overloaded because the quadriceps and hip muscles are not controlling it well. It is very common in working-age adults, usually has a normal X-ray, and responds to a specific strengthening programme. Arthritis and meniscus tears can also present this way, which is why examination matters.
Do I need an MRI for knee pain?
Usually not. An MRI helps when examination suggests a ligament, meniscus or cartilage injury and confirming it would change treatment. Scanning first tends to find incidental changes present in plenty of pain-free people, and treats the picture rather than the patient.
Can knee arthritis be treated without surgery?
The cartilage damage cannot be reversed, but the pain and disability from it very often can be controlled for years without surgery. Weight management and quadriceps strengthening outperform most medications. Surgery is for a joint that is structurally worn out after those measures have genuinely been tried.
When is a knee replacement actually necessary?
When the X-ray shows advanced structural wear, the pain is present at rest or at night, walking distance has collapsed, and non-surgical treatment has been properly exhausted. Age alone is not the deciding factor — how much the knee limits your life is.
