Arthroscopy & Sports Injury Treatment in Chennai

Keyhole surgery across knee, shoulder and ankle, with return to desire short as soon as possible.

Dr. Pankaj Hingarh, MBBS, MS (Orthopaedics) T. Nagar, Chennai Digital X-ray on site

Arthroscopy lets a joint be inspected and repaired through incisions a few millimetres wide. Less soft tissue is disturbed, so recovery is quicker and most procedures are day-care. It is the standard approach for ligament reconstruction, meniscus repair, shoulder stabilisation and cartilage work.

A sports injury handled well in the first week often needs no surgery at all. Handled badly — walked on, strapped up, played through — the same injury can end a season. The value of an early, accurate diagnosis is greater in sports medicine than almost anywhere else in orthopaedics.

Where surgery is needed, the part that determines the result is what happens afterwards. Return to sport here is governed by measured strength symmetry and hop testing, not by how many weeks have passed. Returning before the quadriceps recovers is the single biggest predictor of re-tearing a graft.

Our approach

How we approach a sports injury

01

Seen within 24 to 48 hours

Acute injuries are prioritised. Examining a joint before protective muscle spasm sets in gives the most accurate clinical picture.

02

Prehabilitation before any surgery

Operating on a swollen, stiff knee produces a stiff knee afterwards. Full extension and quadriceps control are restored first — this consistently improves the final result.

03

Repair rather than remove

Meniscus preservation protects the cartilage for decades. Repairable tears are repaired; excision is a last resort, not a shortcut.

04

Cleared by testing, not by date

Return to play is decided on measured strength and hop symmetry against the uninjured side. It is the difference between returning once and returning repeatedly.

Questions

Sports & Arthroscopy — common questions

Anything not covered here, call +91 99622 45671.

What is arthroscopy?
Keyhole joint surgery. A camera a few millimetres across is passed into the joint through a small portal, and instruments through another, so the joint can be inspected and repaired without opening it. Less tissue is disturbed, so recovery is quicker and most procedures are day-care.
How soon should I see someone after a sports injury?
Within 24 to 48 hours if there was a pop, rapid swelling, an inability to bear weight, visible deformity, or the joint giving way. Those five signs suggest structural injury. Minor soreness that improves each day can reasonably be watched.
When can I return to cricket or football after ACL surgery?
Typically nine to twelve months. The evidence is clear that returning before nine months, or before strength matches the other leg, substantially raises the risk of re-injury. We test rather than guess.
Do all sports injuries need an MRI?
No. An MRI is warranted when examination suggests a ligament, meniscus or tendon tear whose confirmation would change what we do. Many injuries are diagnosed and treated on examination and X-ray alone.
